The winners were noticeably male-heavy, and all of the televised awards went to men, except Best New Artist which went to Alessia Cara.

That in itself has caused controversy, as many believe the award should have gone to SZA, especially as Cara’s debut album was released in 2015.

It should also be noted that SZA, the most-nominated woman and one of the most critically acclaimed artists of last year, was shut out from all five awards she had been up for.

Now, the Grammys President has said women need to “step up” to win more awards.

Only 11 of the total 84 awards (including those not shown on television) from the ceremony went to women.

EMOTIONALLY CHARGED: Kesha took to the stage with a few friends

Fans of 30-year-old Kesha have taken to social media to slam the awards ceremony, after she was snubbed in the Best Pop Solo Performance, in favour of Ed Sheehan.

The category was filled with heavy-hitting female powerhouse vocalists, including Kelly Clarkson, Pink and Lady Gaga, as well as Kesha herself, and the award eventually went to Ed Sheehan for Shape Of You.

It marks Kesha’s first ever nomination and Grammy performance, and fans of the Praying singer are now in uproar following the result.

Now, Grammys president Neil Portnow has spoken out about the gender imbalance, and his response has left many scratching their head.

BIG WINNER: Bruno Mars was the stand-out star of the evening

“They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome.”

Grammys President Neil Portnow

After being quizzed on the male-heavy awards, he told Variety: “It has to begin with… women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level.

“[They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome. I don’t have personal experience of those kinds of brick walls that [women] face but I think it’s upon us — us as an industry — to make the welcome mat very obvious, breeding opportunities for all people who want to be creative and paying it forward and creating that next generation of artists.”

Musicians Pink, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson and Kesha are all listed as either writer or producer on their latest albums.

Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich was asked if it was a mistake that Lorde was the only Album of the Year nominee who was not given a performance slot, and he replied: “I don’t know if it was a mistake.

“These shows are a matter of choices. We have a box and it gets full. She had a great album.

“There’s no way we can really deal with everybody.”

Lorde is a two-time Grammy winner whose Melodrama was up for the award, but lost to Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic.

Spotify announced the biggest artists of 2017 in December, with the most streamed singer revealed as Ed Sheehan.

Bruno Mars’ big win may be surprising to many UK viewers, after he failed to promote the album much here, however the project was hugely publicised across the pond.
